How to make a stem-and-leaf plot from the given data and solve stem-and-leaf plot problems: examples and their solutions.

Example 1

For the given data below, make a stem-and-leaf plot. Use the digits from 5 to 9 as the stem.

Make a t shape form like this.

In the Stem part, the left side,
write the digits of tens of the given data:
from 5 (min. 51) to 9 (max. 97).

The right side is the Leaf.

Find the values whose tens are 5:
56, 52.

Then write the ones of the values
in the Leaf part:
6 2.

Find the values whose tens are 6:
60, 69, 67.

Then write the ones of the values
in the Leaf part:
0 9 7.

Find the values whose tens are 7:
74, 78, 77, 75, 70, 74, 74.

Then write the ones of the values
in the Leaf part:
4 8 7 5 0 4 4.

Find the values whose tens are 8:
81, 81, 85, 84, 80, 88.

Then write the ones of the values
in the Leaf part:
1 1 5 4 0 8.

Find the values whose tens are 9:
91, 97.

Then write the ones of the values
in the Leaf part:
1 7.

Make the stem-and-leaf plot again

to arrangeing the Leaf
in ascending order.

Write a key below the plot.

Choose any data. (in the case 70)
And write [Key: 7 | 0 = 70].

This key shows
how to read the stem-and-leaf plot.

So the plot, including the key, is the answer.

Example 2

For the given stem-and-leaf plot, find the number of data that is greater than 74.

The key shows that

the digits of the Stem are tens
and the digits of the Leaf are ones.

So the values that are greater than 74
are these colored ones:
from 75 to 97.

So the number of the values are
3 + 6 + 2.

So 11 is the answer.
