# Distance Formula

How to find the distance between two points by using the distance formula: formula, 1 example, and its solution.

## Formula

The distance between two points (x_{1}, y_{1}) and (x_{2}, y_{2}) is

d = √(x_{2} - x_{1})^{2} + (y_{2} - y_{1})^{2}.

This is the distance formula.

## ExampleDistance: (-3, 1) and (5, 4)

Solution

Solution (Detail)

The given points are (-3, 1) and (5, 4).

Then the distance d is,

x_{2} - x_{1}, 5 - (-3)

square

plus,

y_{2} - y_{1}, 4 - 1

square.

5 - (-3) = 5 + 3

4 - 1 = 3

5 + 3 = 8

8^{2} = 64

+3^{2} = +9

64 + 9 = 73

So d = √73 is the answer.
