# Stem-and-Leaf Plot

How to make and solve a stem-and-leaf plot: 2 examples and their solutions.

## Example

Make a form like this.

Name the titles

Stem and Leaf.

It says

use the digits from 5 to 9 as the stem.

So write

5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

in the Stem.

Find the values whose tens are 5:

56 and 52.

So, next to the Stem 5,

write the ones of the values,

6 and 2,

in the Leaf.

While writing the ones in the Leaf,

mark the values like this.

Find the values whose tens are 6:

60, 69, and 67.

So, next to the Stem 6,

write the ones of the values,

0, 9, and 7,

in the Leaf.

Mark the values

while writing the ones in the Leaf.

Find the values whose tens are 7:

74, 78, 77, 75, 70, 74, and 74.

So, next to the Stem 7,

write the ones of the values,

4, 8, 7, 5, 0, 4, and 4,

in the Leaf.

Find the values whose tens are 8:

81, 81, 85, 84, 80, and 88.

So, next to the Stem 8,

write the ones of the values,

1, 1, 5, 4, 0, and 8,

in the Leaf.

Find the values whose tens are 9:

91 and 97.

So, next to the Stem 9,

write the ones of the values,

1 and 7,

in the Leaf.

Arrange the leaves in ascending order.

Make the same form like this.

Name the titles Stem and Leaf.

And write the stems from 5 to 9.

The leaves of Stem 5 are

6 and 2.

So write the leaves:

2 and 6.

The leaves of Stem 6 are

0, 9, and 7.

So write the leaves:

0, 7, and 9.

The leaves of Stem 7 are

4, 8, 7, 5, 0, 4, and 4.

So write the leaves:

0, 4, 4, 4, 5, 7, and 8.

The leaves of Stem 8 are

1, 1, 5, 4, 0, and 8.

So write the leaves:

0, 1, 1, 4, 5, and 8.

The leaves of Stem 9 are

1 and 7.

1 and 7 are already in ascending order.

So write the same leaves:

1 and 7.

Under the Leaf,

write the key of the plot.

Choose any value:

let's choose 70.

The stem is 7.

And the leaf is 0.

Then write

Key: 7|0 = 70.

So the bottom plot is

the stem-and-leaf plot of the given data.

## Example

Key: 7|0 = 70

This means

the Stem is the tens

and the Leaf is the ones.

So the values greater than 74

are these values.

The number of these values is,

add the leaves,

3 + 6 + 2.

3 + 6 = 9

9 + 2 = 11

So there are 11 values

that are greater than 80.
